LANDER, Wyo. (AP) — A New York woman is in the hospital after she was rescued from the wilderness in Wyoming's Wind River Range.

Leah Bursey had a large laceration on her leg when the crew of search helicopter located her and her husband William in a remote area near Gannet Peak late Tuesday afternoon. KOVE-AM reported she was undergoing surgery Wednesday morning in Lander.

Fremont County authorities say they dispatched a rescue helicopter after getting a distress signal from the east base of the peak late Wednesday afternoon.

The rescuers used a tourniquet on the woman. Some hiked her out on a stretcher for 1 ½ miles to a helicopter equipped with night vision so she could be flown to the hospital. The others remained in the wilderness overnight.
