CHEYENNE, WYO. --- A 44-year-old Cheyenne woman has acknowledged trying to hire someone to kill her husband.

Brenda Poteet appeared in U.S. District Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of a murder for hire. A plea agreement calls for a seven-year federal prison term followed by three years of probation. Poteet also wouldn't be allowed to profit from her story.

Prosecutors say an investigation began after an acquaintance of Poteet told police of a conversation she had overheard. Poteet then called a man and met him several times at a grocery store over the summer, offering to pay him $5,000 to kill her then-husband.

The man turned out to be an undercover officer with the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports sentencing is set for Nov. 28.
