The Natrona County Sheriff's Office is investigating the apparent suicide of a woman whose body was found along Interstate 25 north of Casper on Tuesday night, Sheriff Gus Holbrook said.

The office received a report at 8:15 p.m. of the 54-year-old woman, who was found alongside her vehicle near milepost 190 on the northbound lane, Holbrook said.

"She died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound," he said. "There is no foul play suspected in this case."

The identity of the woman, who was not from Wyoming, is being withheld until investigators notify her next of kin, Holbrook said. He declined to identify what state she was from.

She shot herself with a pistol, and was alone when found by her vehicle, he said.

Officers are still interviewing witnesses

"Nobody witnessed the shooting itself, but they had previously seen this woman with her vehicle sitting on the side of the road," Holbrook said.

Investigators will contact and interview family members and talk again with witnesses, he said.
