Winds Could Fan California Fire

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Fire officials are watching the winds at the scene of a wildfire that threatened homes and forced thousands to flee the mountains above Santa Barbara, Calif.

Santa Barbara County fire Capt. David Sadecki says the blaze in Los Padres National Forest is only 10 percent contained. It's grown to about 2.8 square miles.

The blaze that erupted Monday afternoon threatened about 50 homes and cabins and forced as many as 6,000 campers to evacuate.

Sadecki says the winds currently are light and the fire's moving away from homes.

But the evacuations remain in place. And Sadecki says there's a chance of winds gusting to 40 mph later in the day and changing direction. That could push the fire south toward populated areas.
