Williams Calls Human Rights Advisory Council a “Band-Aid”

Cheyenne City Councilwoman Annette Williams says an ordinance that would create a Human Rights Advisory Council is a, "Band-Aid."

Councilman Dicky Shanor has been the driving force behind the idea, which has the support of Mayor Rick Kaysen as well as six other council members, but Williams feels it's just a way to keep an LGBT ordinance she plans to introduce from going through.

"I just think that this is a Band-Aid for the bigger picture of what's to come," said Williams. "My thought is okay so we get this task force in place, I bring the LGBT ordinance forward, who's to say someone on that board isn't just totally against it for their personal reasons, not for the reasons it's written for."

Williams says she's still finalizing her ordinance, which is very similar to the LGBT anti-discrimination ordinance the Laramie City Council passed in May.

"I was asked to include the unequal treatment based on race, disability, national origin, age and/or religion," said Williams. "We're already protected under state and federal law for our religious beliefs and the other categories, so I just am a little disappointed."

The City Council's Public Services Committee will hear public input on the Human Rights Advisory Council issue at noon on September 9.
