William M. Daley, President Obama’s chief of staff since early this year, has announced plans to step down in January of 2013.

“I made a commitment to the president through his re-election, which I’m confident he will do, and then my wife and I will return to Chicago,” he told Chicago’s NBC affiliate.

When asked if, like his predecessor, Rahm Emanuel, he would run for mayor of Chicago, Daley said, “All I’m trying to do is get through day to day. I have no plans.”

Daley’s family has a long history in Chicago politics — his father and brother both served as mayor, with more than four decades of service between them.
