LANDER, Wyo. (AP) — Firefighters have made significant progress against a wildfire burning near about 50 summer homes in Wyoming.

Crews say higher humidity and overcast skies contributed Thursday night to getting the Fairfield Fire near Lander 71 percent contained.

Fire spokesman Andy Rothleutner says the fire, which is now calculated to be a little bigger than 2 square miles, is now less of a threat.

About 50 evacuated residents met with fire officials Wednesday night and have not been allowed to return yet.

The fire started Monday, forcing the evacuation of Homestead park and Lower Sinks Canyon.

About 230 firefighters are on the scene aided by planes and helicopters.

Crews are also fighting a 100-acre fire in the Medicine Bow National Forest. It is 10 percent contained and has shown little activity. A wildfire in the Washakie Wilderness has grown to just over 700 acres and is being monitored.
