White House Pushes to Loosen Gitmo Transfer Rules

WASHINGTON (AP) ā€” The fate of Guantanamo detainees will be the focus of a struggle in the coming days between the White House and Congress.

President Barack Obama is pushing to overcome obstacles to closing the Guantanamo Bay prison, an elusive goal since he took office.

Administration officials say a Senate defense policy bill that could come up for debate this week would allow them to move out prisoners who have long been cleared for transfer overseas. They remain at the U.S. naval prison in Cuba in part because of a complicated Pentagon certification process required to send detainees abroad.

The bill would ease restrictions and allow suspected terrorist prisoners to come to the U.S. for detention, trial or medical treatment.

Opponents say the security threat is too high to move out detainees.
