A major highway that leads in and out of the Big Horn Basin is open again for travel.

Shortly after 10am on Wednesday, May 27th, WYDOT opened the gates for motor vehicle traffic on US Highway 20 through the Wind River Canyon, south of Thermopolis.

The road had been closed for several days, due to mud and rock slides that made the road impassable.

WYDOT crews and private contractors said some of the debris was 8 feet deep in some areas.

The biggest mess happened at mile post 123 and a reduced speed limit of 30-45 miles per hour has been posted through that area.

Meanwhile, crews are still working to clear and repair the railroad on the other side of the Wind River.
