Upton Fire Destroys 1 Home, Forces Evacuations

UPTON, Wyo. (AP) — One house burned and dozens of others were evacuated as a wildfire burned through the town of Upton in northeastern Wyoming.

State Forester Bill Crapser says no one was injured in the fire that started Tuesday afternoon southeast of Upton. He says the fire burned about 200 acres and was classified as about 75-percent contained Wednesday morning.

The fire destroyed one home and several outbuildings and forced the evacuation of about 25 other homes. Smoke from the fire forced the evacuation of a local school.

The area was in red flag conditions when the fire started, with high winds and dry conditions. About 25 fire engines responded as well as a helicopter and a heavy air tanker out of Rapid City, S.D.
