The 75-year-old woman who was critically injured during a five-vehicle wreck on the Old Glenrock Highway last week died Sunday, a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper said Tuesday.

Leoda H. Cain from Glenrock was the only victim in the crash who had remained hospitalized as of late last week.

The Highway Patrol is the lead investigating agency and probably will present its findings in a few weeks to the Converse County Attorney, who will determine whether charges will be filed, Patrol Lt. Joseph Scimone said.

No one has been cited so far, he said.

The collision occurred near a construction site at mile post 176, which is just inside the Converse County line from Natrona County, Scimone said last week.

The vehicles were eastbound and four were stopped for construction marked by a large sign with yellow lights telling motorists to stop, he said.

“A Ford pickup truck was also traveling eastbound,” he said. “The Ford pickup did not hit its brakes and crashed into the Buick LaCrosse and also into a Honda Accord. And in turn the Honda Accord smashed into the two vehicles in front of it as well.”

The pickup was traveling about 70 mph.

Tuesday, Scimone declined to comment on details of the investigation. He identified the pickup driver as a woman, but declined to give her name.

The Highway Patrol is investigating whether she may have been texting at the time of the accident, he said.

"That is one of the things that we're looking into," Scimone said. "That's part of the  investigation, is to see if there was driver inattentiveness -- that's definitely a cause that's being looked into. We're going to see if there was any distraction taking place as well."

The Wyoming Highway Patrol will issue a press release Wednesday showing that a fatality resulted from the accident, and will give the names of the people involved in the crash, he said.
