Univ. of Wyoming Moves Forward With American Indian Center

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — University officials say they are moving forward with the plan to convert an honors college into an American Indian center for their students.

The University of Wyoming will move its American Indian Studies program from its current cramped location to the Honors College building this summer. The building will accommodate one class, offices, student services and the UW's High Plains American Indian Research Institute and more.

Officials say the move is part of the university's plan to recruit and retain more Native American students.

AIS Director Caskey Russell says the space will provide a sense of community to Native Americans students who may feel lonely being far from their families. Officials also plan to use the building for the program's graduation ceremony and a summer institution for high school students.
