UPDATE: The driver in this crash has been identified as 71 year old Clark Willis of Logan, Utah. The passenger has been identified as 48 year old Magno N. Lazano-Ricardo who is also from Logan.

Their SUV was northbound on US 89 driving through the town of Smoot.  For unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted off the roadway on the right side continuing parallel to the roadway for approximately 275 feet before hitting the edge of a bridge railing. After impact, the vehicle vaulted, overturned one-half time and struck the opposite side of the creek bank. The SUV slid down into the creek and landed on its roof.  Mr. Willis was killed during impact and Mr. Lazano-Ricardo died by drowning according to the coroner.

A possible medical condition is being investigated as the contributing factor in this crash. Traffic was detoured around the crash scene from 2:43 p.m. until 4:55 p.m. Both men were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

ORIGIINAL RELEASE:

A single vehicle crash that happened around 2:30 p.m. on US Highway 89 near Smoot, Wyoming is currently under investigation. Preliminary information is that the crash involved a compact SUV that rolled into a creek and two adult males have been pronounced dead.

Identities are not being released at this time as next of kin notifications have not been made on both men. Traffic is being detoured around the crash site. Contributing factors are still under investigation.
