Tornado Myths Busted

Killer tornadoes last week have weather experts working to dispel some dangerous and long standing myths about them.

USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey says the first myth they want to bust is the belief that the low pressure that accompanies tornadoes, will explode a building. That he says is not true.

Another belief is that opening a window to relieve pressure is a good idea.

“Forget about the windows and just try to get to a safe place. The lowest level of the house, or if you don’t have that, maybe in a bath tub covered by blankets or a mattress or something to protect your body from flying debris.”

Final myth; tornadoes do not seek out trailer parks. Storm tracks prove that’s false. They’re just more subject to wind damage than other structures.
