LAFAYETTE, Colo. (AP) — Authorities are questioning a student after an explosive device was found at Centaurus High School in Lafayette, Colorado.

Lafayette Police Cmdr. Gene McCausey tells Colorado media that a device similar to a pipe bomb was found Monday morning, forcing the evacuation of the school and the closure of a nearby road for several hours.

McCausey says the device could have hurt people nearby had it exploded. The FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are involved in the investigation.

A teacher found the suspicious package inside the school and took it outside. It was removed from the campus by a robot and the Boulder County bomb squad detonated it a short time later in a nearby construction lot.
