Dr. Robert Sternberg, the man who will take over as University of Wyoming President this summer has concluded his visit to the Gem City.

Sternberg’s visit to Laramie began on Monday and included a tour UW campus and meetings with university leaders, faculty and students.

Robert Sternberg’s tight schedule also included meetings with President Tom Buchanan, vice presidents, deans, directors and leaders of the Associated Students of UW. He also spoke to the UW Faculty Senate, laying out the values he will bring to the university and answering questions.

Sternberg says he looks forward to meeting with many more UW students and employees, including staff members, during future visits. He also plans to travel around Wyoming to meet the people of the state.

Sternberg was tapped to become UW’s 24th president by the UW Board of Trustees amid controversy surrounding the University of Wyoming’s search for a new president. Critics objected to the search being conducted in secret, with the names of prospective candidates being kept from the public. Despite a bill being passed in the most recent Wyoming legislative session allowing state colleges and universities to conduct such searches without having to disclose names of candidates, the University did announce the names of Sternberg and three others during the final leg of the search.

During an address to the Faculty Senate on Monday, Sternberg said he was no fan of secrets.

I don’t believe in secrets.  Secrets don’t last very well, anyway.  There’s some things that have to be confidential, but if you ask me a question I’ll give you a straight answer.  If there’s something confidential, I’ll tell you that, but I don’t believe in secrets.”

Currently the provost and senior vice president at Oklahoma State University, Sternberg will begin his work at UW July 1.
