Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Dale Steenbergen says he thinks the presence of a new Public Safety Building to house the Cheyenne Police Department will reduce the number of transients in that vicinity.

Steenbergen says that should help address concerns about transients in the area  of a proposed new Hilton Hotel and 17th street and Pioneer Avenue, adjacent to the Public Safety Building. He says the  building's proximity to the Jack R. Spiker Parking Facility and a proposed skywalk linking the hotel and the parking garage should likewise reduce security concerns about transients in those areas.

Steenbergen also says he thinks many of the reports about the number of transients in the area of the parking garage are exaggerated, based on random visits he has made to the parking facility recently..Steenbergen says  of the transient presence in the garage area "it's not perfect, but it's not the nightmare some people make it out to be".

Steenbergen says besides an increased  police presence the other way to reduce the transient population is to create more jobs. ''Lets put them to work,  a few jobs around can't hurt anything" Steenbergen says.
