A rollover crash threw two people from their vehicle early Tuesday morning, killing one and injuring another, near Alpine in Lincoln County.

Montana resident James Watters, 45, was driving south on Highway 89 at 5:30 a.m. when, near milepost 120, the vehicle drifted off the north shoulder of the roadway.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says in a crash report that the vehicle hit a rock embankment, vaulted and rolled off-axis roughly once before coming to rest along the north side of the roadway.

During the rollover, both Watters and a passenger -- who were not wearing seat belts -- were thrown from the vehicle.

Watters was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was taken by ambulance to Star Valley Medical Center.

The Patrol says alcohol and drug use are being investigated as contributing factors in the crash. The possibility that the driver was fatigued or asleep is also being examined.

The roadway was dry and weather was clear at the time of the rollover.
