A student at Riverton High School is being interviewed by Riverton police as authorities investigate a threat which prompted heavily-armed officers at facilities within Fremont County School District No. 25 on Wednesday.

Superintendent Terry L. Snyder said Wednesday afternoon the interview with the student, a person of interest in the investigation, was underway as of 2:30 p.m.

The student was identified as a person of interest by 8:30 a.m. Wednesday following the discovery of a note containing the threat on Tuesday.

Late Tuesday, the district put out a short press release confirming the existence of the threat, which has not been detailed. Snyder said the press release was intended to both inform parents and deter anyone who may act on the threat, letting them know "they would be facing force" should they decide to take action.

While Tuesday's press release said the threat referred generally to the district, rather than a specific school. But on Wednesday the district explained the threat was specifically against Riverton High School.

Snyder said that information was not released Tuesday night because officials did not want the threat to shift to a different facility.

Snyder praised police officers and school staff for their response to the threat and handling of the situation Wednesday.

The following appeared on Riverton High School's Facebook page Wednesday:

From Superintendent Snyder:

The good part is that nothing bad has happened today.

The RPD has identified an individual of interest. They are conducting a thorough investigation. It is my hope that the evidence will lead to an arrest and conviction. They will investigate all leads.

The high school staff has been a great asset in this investigation. Thank you to them!

I would like to thank everyone for their help and professionalism through out this situation. I also really appreciate the work of Charlie and the RPD. The State Highway Patrol and the County Sheriff's department were also great in providing protect to all of our buildings.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
