RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) — Parents at Riverton Middle School are collecting donations of nonperishable food so children in need won't go hungry over their holiday breaks.

The Associated Press reports the school's parents group is organizing an event to collect food Saturday at Smith's Food and Drug. Monetary donations to buy fresh items just before the holiday break are being accepted through Dec. 17.

Students eligible for free and reduced-price lunches at school — and others feeling anxious about going home for the holiday break — can sign up for a bag of food so they can have meals when school isn't in session during the holidays. Riverton mother Karen Murdock says more than half of local students qualify for free and reduced-price lunches.
