Despite increasing their visibility at high-crash intersections, Cheyenne Police say drivers continue to run red lights.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says the department issued 749 red light citations in 2016, an increase of 71 percent from the 436 tickets issued in 2015.

"The CPD itself had a recent crash involving a red light violation," Malatesta said in a press release. "On January 19, a person running a red light at the intersection of E. 20th and Warren Avenue struck an officer's vehicle."

Luckily, no one was hurt in the crash, but Malatesta says it resulted in the loss of a new cop car with only 2,323 miles on it.

"It highlights the need for continued enforcement," said Malatesta.

Malatesta says the department has made it a priority to decrease the number of red light crashes in 2017.
