The deadly earthquake and tsunami that ravaged Japan is now wreaking havoc along the west coast of the United States with powerful ocean waves. The Coast Guard is searching for a man who was swept out to sea while taking photos of waves with two friends near the mouth of a river in northern California.

Tracy Aguilar, Red Cross branch director for Natrona and Converse counties, says that because they house the national emergency response vehicle for the region, they've been put on standby, and may be called to go to California at a moment's notice.

Ms. Aguilar said that Red Cross and military personnel in Japan have all been accounted for.

To contact U.S. citizens in Japan:

"The best way to contact U.S. citizens living or traveling in Japan is to contact the U.S. Department of State Office of Overseas Citizen Services and that number is 1-888-407-4747."
