Tuesday at 4:05 p.m., a Lindenhurst, Illinois resident failed to yield the right of way to an oncoming semi truck resulting in one fatality. 65 year old Bruce M. Hinton was leaving a scenic pullout near Devils Tower in his car. Hinton failed to yield the right of way to a northbound semi truck and trailer driven by 46 year old Troy D. Gossard of New Underwood, South Dakota. Gossard steered left in an attempt to avoid the car but could not.

Mr. Hinton was killed in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. A nine year old passenger in Mr. Hinton's vehicle was injured and taken by ambulance to Rapid City, South Dakota and hospitalized. The child is reported to be in stable condition. Mr. Gossard was not injured and all occupants were buckled in at the time of the crash.

The highway was temporarily closed due to the crash but traffic was detoured around the scene with the help of U.S. Park Service Officers and local emergency responders.
