MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Fabio has formed in the Pacific and could become a hurricane but is expected to stay well offshore of Mexico.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says the new storm's maximum sustained winds Thursday were 40 mph (65 kph).

Fabio's center is about 425 miles (680 kilometers) south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, and is moving west at nine mph (15 kph).

Farther out at sea, Hurricane Emilia's maximum sustained winds strengthened again to near 115 mph (185 kph) but gradual weakening is expected later in the day.

Emilia is centered about 925 miles (1,485 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California and is moving west at 12 mph (19 kph).
