Golden shovels hit dirt outside of the Wyoming Medical Center Thursday morning for the formal ground breaking on the construction of a new west tower. Hospital CEO Vickie Diamond says it means not only a new mother and baby unit and orthopedic and neurosurgery unit, but a much anticipated "real new front door".

First Lady Carol Mead was the honored guest in town for the ceremony.

"This is a wonderful new addition, not just to Casper, but to the whole state. Hospitals have to keep up to date. This expansion is going to offer all kinds of new amenities and state-of-the-art facilities for all of the residents here in Wyoming."

The $40 million addition also includes an expanded rehabilitation gym, new chapel, giftshop and cafeteria.

Completion is expected by December of 2013.
