A Mills man convicted of robbing a downtown Casper bank has been sentenced to prison.

26-year old Michael Sanders will spend the next 10-15 years at the Wyoming State Penitentiary, after he was convicted by a jury of robbing the downtown branch of the Hilltop National Bank.

Prosecutors say back in February, Sanders entered the bank, pulled out a kitchen knife and demanded money.

He walked out with more than $2,200...most of which was spent on gifts for his girlfriend and a weekend birthday trip to Thermopolis.

Back in August, a jury found him guilty of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

During his trial, sanders said he told investigators he did it, because he had to say something, but then told jurors that he was retracting that statement.

The prosecution played a recorded phone conversation from jail, during which Sanders told 3 different people that he needed an alibi and asked them for their help.

He had previously served time in Ohio, for his part in a separate bank robbery a few years ago.
