A 46-year-old transient in behind bars after leading Cheyenne police on a high-speed chase last (Wednesday) night.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says Michael Yates was stopped near the intersection of E. 5th Street and House Avenue around 7:45 p.m. for having an obscured license plate.

"While talking with the officer, Yates drove away at a high rate of speed," said Malatesta. "The officer was able to get back into her patrol car and follow Yates and Yates crashed at the railroad tracks on Campstool Avenue north of the HollyFrontier refinery."

"Yates then fled on foot and was captured a short distance away at the 1100 block of Dunn Avenue," Malatesta added.

Yates was arrested on three outstanding warrants, including a felony warrant for probation violation.

"He was also arrested for the actions that took place last night, which include driving under suspension, reckless driving, fleeing from police, driving without headlights, a stop sign violation, no registration, no proof of insurance, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to use a turn signal and felony possession of methamphetamine," said Malatesta.

Yates has yet to be formally charged by the Laramie County District Attorney's Office.
