A man who reportedly had marijuana and a gun in his backpack is in custody after leading police officers and sheriff's deputies on a high-speed chase that started in Laramie Wednesday afternoon.

Corporal Jeff McKinney of the Albany County Sheriff's Office says he was on US 287 headed back to Laramie when, at 12:20 p.m., he heard over his radio that a Laramie police officer had just seen a man on a motorcycle speed past at over 100 mph near the Third Street and Interstate 80 interchange.

McKinney says the motorcycle entered I-80 westbound from Third Street, and another officer saw the motorcycle exit at Curtis Street. Officers evidently found the motorcycle at the Petro parking lot and tried to arrest the rider, but he took off and got back on I-80 westbound.

Officers and deputies chased the motorcycle until they entered a construction zone and the rider began passing semi-trailers on the right shoulder at speeds of at least 100 mph, McKinney says, at which point they could no longer pursue.

McKinney and other deputies kept going west on I-80 to search for the bike. They notified the Wyoming Highway Patrol, which had a trooper stop near exit 279 to wait for the motorcycle.

Meanwhile, deputies checked a gas station at exit 290, but didn't find what they were looking for. The bike didn't pass the state trooper and did not double back on Harris Lane.

"So we knew he was somewhere in the area," McKinney says.

Deputies checked nearby dirt roads and before long, a deputy on I-80 near mile post 288 saw the motorcycle on Dutton Creek Road.

McKinney was nearby, so he sped over and arrested 23-year-old Samuel Wolk, who McKinney believes is a Texas resident passing through the area. McKinney says the chase ended at about 1:45 p.m.

"He had a small amount of marijuana in a backpack," McKinney says, adding that deputies also found a 9mm pistol and a magazine containing one round.

Wolk was booked into the Albany County Detention Center. No official word yet on what charges he might face.
