Laramie Man Accused of Murder Appears for Preliminary Hearing

A Laramie man accused of killing his step-grandmother appeared for his preliminary hearing Tuesday, June 13 in Albany County Circuit Court.

Albany County Circuit Court Judge Robert Castor ruled that there was sufficient evidence to send Trevor Sanford, 30, who is charged with first-degree murder, to District Court.

Sanford was originally charged with second-degree murder, but the felony charges were amended to first-degree murder.

Prosecutor Kurt Britzius said the evidence was overwhelming and that there was probable cause that Sanford killed Marilyn “Kay” Dlugosh, 75. According to the affidavit, Dlugosh’s body was found in her home on March 29. Sanford had been living with Dlugosh since March 23, after he was released from the Albany County Detention Center after being incarcerated for leading law enforcement on a high speed chase in January.

Britzius said among the reasons there was probable cause that Sanford committed the crime was the fact that Sanford was living with Dlugosh and the time of the alleged crime and that Sanford took Dlugosh’s white Ford Explorer, cell phone and wallet.

Defense attorney Randy Hiller said there was no evidence to absolutely put Sanford at the scene of the crime and that there were no bloody footprints at the scene of the crime, despite the prosecution saying that there was blood in multiple points in the house.

Sanford was arrested by Colorado law enforcement in Westminster Colorado on April 4^th.

Sanford is being held in the Albany County Detention Center. An arraignment has yet to be scheduled.
