LAW ENFORCEMENT MADE CONTACT WITH THOSE INVOLVED AND DETERMINED THERE WAS NOT A "CURRENT SAFETY CONCERN" IN RESPONSE TO THE REPORT

PINEDALE, WYO. (AP) - FIREFIGHTERS IN WESTERN WYOMING SAY A WILDFIRE THAT HAS DESTROYED 55 HOMES AND FORCED THE EVACUATION OF ABOUT 500 RURAL RESIDENTS WAS CAUSED BY AN ABANDONED WARMING FIRE THAT HAD BEEN LEFT UNATTENDED.

THE FIRE HAS BURNED ABOUT 90 SQUARE MILES (233.1 SQ. KILOMETERS) SINCE IT WAS FIRST REPORTED SEPT. 15. FIREFIGHTERS REPORTED SATURDAY THAT IT WAS ABOUT 40 PERCENT CONTAINED AND REMAINS SOUTH OF A HIGHWAY THAT LEADS TO THE JACKSON HOLE REGION.

ABOUT 1,160 PERSONNEL HAVE BEEN FIGHTING THE FIRE, WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON THE SOUTHWEST SIDE OF THE FIRE IN HOPES OF PROTECTING HOMES.

FIREFIGHTERS ALSO HAVE BEEN SHORING UP FIRE LINES TO KEEP THE FLAMES FROM CROSSING U.S. 189/191.

WARM, DRY AND WINDY WEATHER CONDITIONS IDEAL FOR FIRE GROWTH WERE EXPECTED TO PERSIST THROUGH SUNDAY.

​GABRIEL VILLALVA (VEE-ALL-VUH) WAS ARRESTED ON SEPT. 19 AFTER LEADING POLICE ON A 15-MINUTE CHASE WHICH ENDED WITH HIS SUV CATCHING FIRE.

OFFICER KEVIN MALATESTA SAYS DURING THE PURSUIT, VILLALVA REPORTEDLY SWERVED TOWARDS AN OFFICER WHO WAS ATTEMPTING TO DEPLOY TIRE SPIKES, CRASHED INTO A PATROL CAR AND DROVE ONTO THE CHEYENNE COUNTRY CLUB GOLF COURSE, SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGING THE PUTTING GREEN.

"WE HAVE THIS PERSON ENGAGING IN THIS VERY DANGEROUS BEHAVIOR, PUTTING THE PUBLIC AT RISK, DRIVING THROUGH A PARK, DRIVING THROUGH A GOLF COURSE AND IN THE STATE OF WYOMING ELUDING THE POLICE, DRIVING IN THIS FASHION WHEN THEY'RE RUNNING AWAY AND CAUSING A PURSUIT, THAT PORTION ITSELF IS ONLY A MISDEMEANOR OFFENSE."

VILLALVA WAS CHARGED WITH INTERFERENCE WITH A PEACE OFFICER-INJURY, RECKLESS DRIVING AND ELUDING. HE WAS SCHEDULED TO BE IN COURT FRIDAY MORNING, BUT PROCEEDINGS WERE SUSPENDED FOR AN EVALUATION.

A 72-YEAR-OLD WYOMING MAN IS DEAD FOLLOWING A SINGLE-VEHICLE ROLLOVER NORTH OF POWELL.

THE WYOMING HIGHWAY PATROL SAYS JOHN STROM WAS HEADED EAST ON LANE 5 AROUND 11:11 A.M. TUESDAY WHEN HE LOST CONTROL OF HIS PICKUP AND ROLLED IT THREE TIMES.

STROM, WHO WAS NOT WEARING HIS SEAT BELT, WAS THROWN FROM THE PICKUP AND DIED AT THE SCENE.

THE PATROL SAYS A POSSIBLE MEDICAL CONDITION MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE CRASH.

JACKSON HOLE, WYO. (AP) - TWO MEN HAVE DIED AFTER BECOMING TRAPPED INSIDE A TRENCH ON A CONSTRUCTION SITE IN WYOMING.

TETON COUNTY UNDERSHERIFF MATT CARR SAYS THE DEATHS WERE THE RESULT OF A "TRAGIC ACCIDENT."

THE JACKSON HOLE NEWS AND GUIDE REPORTS THAT THE TWO MEN WERE INSIDE THE TRENCH, WHICH WAS BETWEEN 12 AND 15 FEET DEEP, ON A HOME CONSTRUCTION SITE ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

OFFICIALS SAY THE MEN LIKELY SUFFOCATED AFTER THE TRENCH COLLAPSED, TRAPPING THEM.

AUTHORITIES IDENTIFIED THE MEN AS JUAN BAEZ-SANCHEZ AND VICTORIANO GARCIA-PEREZ. NO OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE MEN HAS BEEN RELEASED.
