A Mills man is heading to prison for shooting a man he believed was selling drugs, to his step-son.

John Carlton was sentenced to six months in prison, followed by an additional six month suspended sentence with a year of probation, after pleading guilty to reckless endangering and possession of a controlled substance.

Prosecutors say in April, Carlton met the victim at Highland Cemetery in Casper.

Carlton told an investigator he was only trying to scare the alleged dealer, but the gun went off, when he hit the man in the face with the weapon.

The victim survived and sustained a shoulder injury.

At his sentencing, prosecutors mentioned that Carlton had prior drug convictions himself.
