A Casper man is denying that he intentionally started a fire.

Forty-Seven-year-old Jefferey Oliver has pleaded not guilty to one charge of first degree arson.

Investigators say he intentionally started a fire in an apartment on the 300 block of North Lincoln Street in mid-April.

Four adults and two children were in the apartment at the time, but they were all able to escape safely.

Investigators later determined the fire was started in a refrigerator.

Oliver later admitted to police he wanted his girlfriend to pay more attention to him, so he started the fire and then went back to bed, with intentions of putting out the blaze a short time later to save everyone.

However the blaze got out of control and prosecutors say Oliver’s plan to play hero, went up in flames.

He is being held on $50,000 bond, awaiting trial.
