Illegal Campfire May Have Started Grand Teton Fire

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — One of several wildfires that broke out Thursday in northwestern Wyoming may have been started by an illegal campfire.

Firefighters responding to the fire on Cody Peak in Grand Teton National Park found a campfire ring.

Crews contained that fire along with a small fire probably caused by lightning on Sherman Peak in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Two other small fires were also reported.

A new 5-acre wildfire was also reported in Yellowstone National Park near its northern boundary.

Partial fire restrictions are in effect in Teton, Lincoln and Sublette counties because of the high fire danger.

Meantime, the Fontenelle Fire, which started June 24 in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, is 80 percent contained.

The 153-square-mile Arapaho Fire in the Medicine Bow National Forest northwest of Wheatland is 87 percent contained.
