Emergency responders received a noon-hour call that someone was in distress and on a sheet of ice on the North Platte River under the First Street bridge in Casper.

Justin Smith, fire prevention officer with Casper Fire EMS, said rescuers made two attempts using a Stokes Stretcher to get the man up to the deck, from where he was transported to the Wyoming Medical Center.

The man's condition is unknown but he was conscious during the rescue. Officer Smith said the decision to use the stretcher to raise the man instead of risk crossing the water was due to the dangers of hypothermia.
