An official with the Wyoming Highway Patrol says when you hit the road this winter, check the latest travel conditions, make sure your tires are up to the job and most of all, slow down.

Sgt. Duane Ellis says every winter the patrol investigates crashes caused by excessive speed. He says those can be prevented simply by slowing down to a speed appropriate for the weather conditions, which often may be well below the posted speed limit.

Ellis says it's also important to make sure your car can handle winter weather. He says that especially means you need to check your tires to make sure they can handle ice and snow. Ellis says if you are hitting the highway for any distance it's also a good idea to check the latest road and travel conditions along your route, especially since the weather in Wyoming can often vary greatly.

He says the latest information is immediately available by dialing 511, or online at wyoroad.info.
