CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — A group in Casper has been pushing to improve safety on the North Platte River since an 11-year-old boy drowned last summer.

Alex Cressy drowned after he and another boy were swept into the river in August. Onlookers say Cressy saved the younger boy's life by pushing him toward shore.

It was the 13th drowning in the North Platte within the Casper city limits since 1990.

Since then, more than 30 people have joined a group seeking to improve water safety education and availability of life jackets and lifesaving devices along the river.

The  group is seeking to raise $44,000 for the projects.
