JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — The League of American Bicyclists has awarded Jackson and Teton County a gold designation as a bicycle-friendly community.

The Jackson Hole region is one of only 16 communities in the country to obtain the status.

The organization assesses a community's approach to bicycling based on engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement and evaluation.

Brian Schilling, of Jackson Hole Community Pathways, cited the total amount of bike path miles as one of the top reasons for landing the designation.

The Associated Press reports that the Teton County bike system has 38 miles, and Grand Teton National Park has 14.
