Wyoming Governor Matt Mead has been asked to serve as co-chair of the National Governor Association’s (NGA) Special Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety. The committee addresses homeland security, the National Guard and homeland defense, criminal justice and public safety, and veterans’ affairs.

Incoming NGA chair, Nebraska Governor Heineman appointed Mead to the position. The committee is co-chaired by a Republican and Democratic Governor. Mead’s term will run from July 2011 to July 2012.

Mead was reappointed to the NGA’s Natural Resources Committee, which has jurisdiction over agriculture, energy, the environment, and natural resources issues. The Governor also continues to serve on the Council of Governors. This group of ten governors is chosen by the President to advise the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the White House Homeland Security Council on matters related to the National Guard and civil support missions.

It is an honor to serve in this capacity and I appreciate very much that Governor Heineman would consider me for this position. Governors have a vital role in homeland security and I look forward to representing these leaders and bringing a state perspective to the national debate.
