One person is dead and another was hospitalized following a Thursday evening rollover crash on Interstate 25.

Sergio Dominguez-Valenzuela, 39, was killed shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday near mile post 40, roughly 27 miles north of Cheyenne.

According to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Dominguez-Valenzuela was driving a 1990 Chevrolet van northbound on I-25 when the rear tire failed, sending the van into a spin. The van spun into the median, where it tripped and rolled multiple times.

Dominguez-Valenzuela was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. He was not wearing his seatbelt.

Maria Borjon De La Cruz, a 48-year-old Gillette resident, was in the front passenger seat. She was not wearing her seatbelt either, and was partially ejected during the crash. She was airlifted to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where she was hospitalized.

The Patrol says the tire failure and a lack of seat belt use are being investigated as contributing factors in the crash. Dominguez-Valenzuela was the 27th person killed on Wyoming highways in 2016. The same period in 2015 saw 56 highway deaths statewide.
