The Mission: Find the five best value breakfasts in Downtown Casper
Status: Complete failure!

Allow me to elaborate -

As any true Casperite will tell you, if you are looking for a great breakfast, Sherrie's Place is at the top of the list. But is it a good value? I was determined to find out.

As I walked through the door, there were no surprises. Room-long tables shared by friends and strangers alike? Check. Random coffee mugs hanging from every wall? Check. The scent of fresh-baked cinnamon rolls tantalizing the nostrils? Check. Local celebrity, Sherrie, bustling from table to table taking orders? Check.

When I first approached owner Sherrie Lopez (in the middle of a busy breakfast service, I might add) it was clear that she was a very busy woman, so I got right to the point.

"I'm looking for the five best breakfast values in Downtown Casper!" I announced with veiled scepticism. The quality of the food was never in question, but I had honestly never heard that Sherrie's was prime destination for a cheap meal.
I was clearly out of my depth as she reach behind her back, produced a menu, and without even a cursory glance, flipped it over and pointed to what I would later learn is the tastiest, most filling breakfast that I have ever experienced... all for under $5! Pancakes, Eggs, Sausage (or bacon) and coffee. She had my attention.

My original plan was to just grab a picture of the building, jot down a couple of notes and be out the door and on to my next stop, but Sherrie would not take no for an answer. I was told that I had to taste it. As my friends will tell you, it is not exactly difficult to drag me into an argument, but I know better than to go up against a woman who deals with grumpy, hungry men for a living. I quietly agreed to wait for the food.

What I learned next took me completely by surprise. As I tried my best to stay out of the way (the last thing I wanted was to come between Sherrie and her paying customers), it was brought to my attention that Sherrie's Place was recently the subject of some national acclaim! In fact, the out-of-the-way, local favorite had been featured in Food Network Magazine!

Yeah - turns out, when the Food Network went looking for a killer breakfast in Wyoming, they knew just where to stop - but they weren't interested in sausage and pancakes. According to the article, Sherrie's Chicken-Fried Steak is the star of the show, and I have to admit that after reading the article, my mouth was watering. Having not ordered the chicken-fried steak, it would be difficult for me to tell you too much more about it, but the way I see it, if it's good enough for Bobby Flay and the crew, it's good enough for me!

Just as Sherrie wrapped up the tale of the Food Network article, my, now much-anticipated, meal arrived. The first thing that I noticed was the size of it all. These are not your grandmother's pancakes! These suckers could barely fit on the plate. Add to that the best breakfast sausage that I have ever tasted and two eggs cooked to order... words can't describe the satisfaction that I felt when I got to the last bite.

When I had first ordered my meal, a nearby customer mentioned that it was, "better tasting and cheaper than McDonalds - not to mention that you get REAL eggs." I couldn't have said it better myself. Simply awesome.

Sure, I might have spent a bit more time at Sherrie's Place than I originally planned, but in the end, it was well worth it.

The next time you're in the neighborhood, be sure to stop into Sherries Place for one of the best breakfasts you can find... if you have the chicken-fried steak, drop me a line and let me know how it is!
