Governor Matt Mead issued the following statement regarding the passing of former Secretary of State Thyra Thomson.

"Thyra is one of the most highly regarded political figures in Wyoming’s history, for her many accomplishments and also for the length of her tenure in office. I have known her since childhood as a wonderful person with an immense amount of character and an abiding love for Wyoming. Carol and I will miss her - the entire State of Wyoming will miss her.”

Thomson was the first woman elected Secretary of State in Wyoming and she served from 1963-1987. Thomson was elected six times by Wyoming voters and worked alongside Governors Hansen, Hathaway and Herschler, serving as acting Governor in their absences from Wyoming. In recognition of her regulation of the sale of new issues of securities, she was elected president of the North American Securities Administrators, representing all 50 states, Canada and Mexico.

Wyoming Secretary of State Max Maxfield issued the following statement on the passing of Thyra Thomson:

“Wyoming has lost a legendary Wyoming public servant and a vanguard of her time with the passing of Thyra Thomson. Her contributions to her beloved State are immeasurable and significant in the legacy she leaves us all. During her historic twenty four years, as Wyoming’s Secretary of State, she touched the lives of citizens throughout the State. Though her dedicated service and statesmanship, Thyra Thomson earned a well-deserved and iconic place in Wyoming’s history.”
U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) released the following statement regarding the passing of former Wyoming Secretary of State Thyra Thomson:

"Bobbi and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Thyra Thomson. She was a dear friend, and we will miss her greatly.“In Washington, I have a picture in my Senate office of Thyra and President Ronald Reagan for all to see. It was taken in Cheyenne when she was Secretary of State. It is a constant reminder of Thyra’s leadership, her legacy and her commitment to our state and our nation."

Services for Thyra Thomson will take place in Cheyenne on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Cheyenne. Acting Governor Max Maxfield, in coordination with Governor Mead, has ordered both the U.S. flag and the State of Wyoming flag be flown at half-staff statewide from sunrise until sunset beginning today through June 21st.
