A former Cheyenne woman has been sentenced to prison for engaging in a mail theft, bank fraud and aggravated identity theft scheme.

U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson on Monday sentenced Dawn Marie Wheeler, 51, to serve consecutive prison sentences of 27 months and 24 months, respectively.

Between Nov. 2017 and Feb. 2018, Wheeler and various associates committed a spree of mail thefts in Laramie County.

Along with stealing mail from dozens of postal customers, Wheeler and her associates stole identities, opened unauthorized accounts, made unauthorized deposits and withdrawals, forged stolen checks and engaged in other related illegal activity.

The Laramie County Sheriff's Office, Cheyenne Police Department and U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigated the mail theft scheme and with the assistance of various concerned citizens, were able to identify Wheeler and her associates.

Wheeler was also ordered to pay restitution to her victims, but the court has not yet determined the amount.
