The Wyoming State Forestry Division in Casper has matching grant dollars available to private land owners who want to carry out wild fire mitigation work around their properties.

Natrona County Wild Fire Mitigation Coordinator, Sam Weaver, says they strongly encourage property owners to create defensible space.

"We're in a very dry summer very similar to conditions we had in 2006 when we had the Jackson Canyon Fire and Casper Mountain is an old forest and prime for a catastrophic fire."

Weaver points out that the structures that are surviving fires like the High Park fire near Fort Collins are those that have had wild fire mitigation work done around them.

Contact the State Forestry Office in Casper, 234 6116 for more information and check out the Firewise Wyoming website for ideas on how to create defensible space.
