CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Firefighters are working to put out the first lightning-caused fire in Yellowstone National Park this season.

The 5-acre Blacktail Fire was reported Thursday afternoon near the park’s northern boundary in northwest Wyoming.

Park spokesman Al Nash says the decision was made to suppress it because of the dry conditions and the fire’s location about a mile from Grand Loop Road.

Nash says Yellowstone reviews each fire on whether to attack it or let it burn. He says there’s been no blanket decision to suppress every fire in the park this season although the park has imposed temporary fire restrictions.

The Yellowstone fire is one of several that broke out Thursday in northwestern Wyoming. One fire in neighboring Grand Teton National Park may have been started by an illegal backcountry campfire.
