Faculty and Students Worry about UW Tuition Hikes

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Some faculty and students at the University of Wyoming question the tuition increases approved last week by UW trustees.

Last week, the UW Board of Trustees approved a 5-percent increase for the 2015-16 academic year and 4 percent for each year thereafter.

Most of the money from next year's increase is slated to fund faculty compensation.

Faculty Senate Chair Ed Janak says more revenue is needed for salaries but he senses that faculty are not in favor of putting the burden on the backs of students.

UW staff Senate President Rachel Stevens tells the Laramie Boomerang that the burden of paying UW salaries "cannot rest primarily on student tuition and fees" in the long run.
