Wyoming's Senior Senator questioned the Secretary of Defense this week on topics of concern for Wyoming. Senator, Mike Enzi asked for clarification on reports that the President, in the 2013 defense budget, would close one military base in each state and make cuts to missile defense. In response DOD Secretary, Leon Panetta said the budget maintains the country's deterrents.

"We think we need to maintain our missiles, we need to maintain our submarines, we need to maintain our bombers that are part of our deterrent and we will continue to do that."

On the question of bases closing, and Enzi points out that Wyoming has only one base, the secretary said the Base Relocation and Closure Process will be used, suggesting the move to close bases would not necessarily impact every state.

According to the Strategic Air Command website, 500 Minuteman III missiles are housed across Wyoming, North Dakota, and Montana.
