An 8-year-old boy died Monday at Ivinson Memorial Hospital after a sledding accident in the Happy Jack area east of Laramie near Highway 210.

The Albany County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is ongoing and the name of the boy will not be released until the family has been notified.

Deputies responded to the old Happy Jack ski area shortly after 11:15 a.m. Monday for a report of a young boy who had been sledding and accidentally hit his head on a tree, causing severe head trauma.

The first deputy to arrive at the scene worked with another person to perform CPR on the boy until an ambulance arrived.

A helicopter had been dispatched and and was on the scene, but it was not used to transport the boy.  Emergency medical workers decided the boy’s injuries were so severe that he needed to be taken to Ivinson Memorial Hospital immediately.

The boy was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The Albany County Sheriff’s Office is reminding outdoors enthusiasts to use extreme caution while sledding in the area.
