Jake entered the Marine Corps immediately following high school graduation while living in Salt Lake City, UT.  He had actually joined the year before following his junior year, fulfilling his 12 year desire to be a Marine.  He served as an infantryman and was stationed with 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines.  He Served there for 4 years and by literally flipping a coin, decided to leave in 1997 at the end of his enlistment.  He was stationed at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, and deployed overseas twice including places like Okinawa and Hokkaido, Japan.  He also had the opportunity to participate in a mixed U.S. and Russian training during the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII.  He started as a SAW gunner, and worked his way up to becoming a squad leader before leaving.
