The Casper Mountain Fire District is reminding residents in the Casper area that a controlled burn was set to begin this morning on Casper Mountain, and there is no need to call 911 to report it.

The slash pile on Tower Hill was set to be burned Saturday, April 21 beginning at 9 a.m. Cordell Anthony, assistant fire chief for the district, says fire crews are monitoring the burn.

Smoke from the fire will be visible from Casper and nearby areas. Fire officials are asking the public to remember that this is a controlled burn, and people should not call 911 to report the smoke.

Calling 911 unnecessarily ties up phone lines and could potentially impede a timely response for anyone calling to report an actual emergency.

Digital highway signs in the Casper area were programmed to notify drivers of the controlled burn on Friday.
