Parents have a new option to help prepare their kids for kindergarten.

The Children’s Discovery Center at Laramie County Community College will offer a half-day kindergarten readiness program beginning August 26th.

"The part-time program was designed because we were getting calls from people that didn't want a full day of curriculum for their young children," said Carrie Westling, Director of the Children’s Discovery Center. "And so with an anonymous gift of $10,000 that we received to help build the program, we were able to add another classroom."

Westling says the nine-month program is a great way for kids to develop the necessary skills they need to start school.

"Our children now are expected to go to school and be academic ready and they are also expected to be socially ready to start the rigors of education," said Westling. "The way they learn is through active learning, it has to be fun, it has to be engaging and it has to be hands-on. So those are the components that we build into our program."

Sessions will be held from 8:00 a.m. to noon or 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. For more information or to register your child call (307) 778-1303 or email thixon@lccc.wy.edu.
